Week-Long KEPHIS Training to Equip Upper Makueni Mango Farmers for Quality Production and Market Access

Approximately 1,000 mango farmers across Upper  Makueni are set to benefit from a week-long training organized by KEPHIS, sponsored by Trade Mark Africa in collaboration with Makueni County , running from today, 24th November 2025, to Friday, 28th November 2025.

The training is designed to significantly boost farmer capacity in pest identification, pest management, and compliance with export market requirements, key factors that enhance mango quality, reduce losses, and promote access to both local and international markets.

The program, taking place concurrently in various locations across the county, is part of ongoing efforts to promote safe trade, expand market opportunities, and equip farmers with the knowledge needed to meet the export standards.

The week’s activities began with a courtesy call to the Makueni County Government, where both teams acknowledged the importance of continued collaboration in strengthening the mango value chain. The County Government appreciated the strong partnership with KEPHIS and emphasized the value of joint efforts in promoting agricultural development and supporting farmer livelihoods.

During the opening session, Makueni County agriculture officers highlighted the need for farmers to adopt Good Agricultural Practices  to enhance mango quality and marketability. Farmers were also sensitized on KEPHIS’ mandate in safeguarding plant health, promoting safe trade, certifying seeds and planting materials, and ensuring compliance with national and international phytosanitary standards.

Throughout the week-long engagement, farmers will receive practical demonstrations, expert guidance, and detailed discussions on key areas including:
* Identification of fruit flies and other major pests affecting mango production
* Pest management strategies to improve quality and minimize post-harvest losses
* Export market requirements such as compliance procedures, market standards, documentation, and phytosanitary measures
* Recap and discussion sessions to reinforce learning and address farmer concerns
